Sustainable Packaging in Vegan Beauty: Brands That Go Beyond the Formula
When I first committed to vegan beauty, I was laser-focused on ingredients. Is it plant-based? Is it cruelty-free? Check and check! But about a year into my journey, I had an uncomfortable realization: my bathroom was still filled with plastic. Lots and lots of plastic.
That’s when I understood that truly ethical beauty needs to consider the entire lifecycle of a product—from sourcing to what happens to the packaging after I’ve squeezed out the last drop of serum. Once you’ve learned about hidden animal ingredients in your beauty products, the next step in your vegan beauty journey is considering environmental impact.
The Packaging Problem in Beauty
The global cosmetics industry produces over 120 billion units of packaging annually, most of which isn’t recyclable. Yikes! Even as I was making compassionate choices for animals, I was contributing to environmental damage that ultimately harms wildlife and ecosystems.
This realization led me to research brands that take packaging seriously. Ethique immediately stood out with their commitment to zero-waste packaging. Their Sweet & Spicy Volumizing Solid Shampoo Bar comes in a compostable paper wrapper, works beautifully, and lasts nearly three months—eliminating the need for plastic bottles entirely.
Refillable Systems That Actually Work
Many brands claim to offer refillable options, but they’re often clunky or still involve significant waste. Kjaer Weis’s approach is different—their Refillable Foundation Compact uses a magnetic metal case that you buy once, then simply pop in new foundation pans when needed. The pans are aluminum (infinitely recyclable) and come in minimal paper packaging.
I was initially skeptical about whether the quality would match my non-refillable favorites, but their foundation provides beautiful medium coverage and wears wonderfully throughout the day. My skin looks naturally flawless, and my conscience is clearer too.
Beyond Recycling: Upcycled Ingredients
Taking sustainability a step further, some innovative vegan brands are now using upcycled ingredients—byproducts from food production that would otherwise be discarded.
UpCircle’s Face Serum with Coffee Oil uses upcycled coffee grounds, a byproduct of the coffee industry. Not only does this reduce waste, but these grounds are actually packed with antioxidants and caffeine that leave my skin glowing. I’ve replaced three products with this one serum, further reducing my packaging footprint.
The Water Problem
Another sustainability issue many consumers don’t consider is water waste. Traditional liquid products like shampoos and cleansers can be up to 80% water—essentially, you’re paying for water and plastic packaging to transport water!
Switching to concentrated or waterless products has been a game-changer for me. HiBar’s Solid Shampoo and Conditioner Bars eliminated four plastic bottles from my shower. They’re highly concentrated, so they last much longer than their liquid counterparts—I’ve been using the same conditioner bar for nearly four months!
For my skincare, I’ve fallen in love with LOLI Beauty’s Date Nut Brûlée, a waterless multipurpose balm that comes in a reusable glass pot. It moisturizes my face, body, and hair, replacing three separate products and their associated packaging.
Plastic-Free Makeup Innovations
Makeup has traditionally been one of the harder categories to find sustainable packaging options, but innovative brands are changing that. Elate Cosmetics offers beautiful bamboo compacts with magnetic inserts for their pressed powders, blushes, and eyeshadows.
Their Pressed Cheek Color in “Brave” gives me a natural-looking flush that lasts all day, and I can refill it without tossing the compact. For everyday looks, I use Antonym Cosmetics’ Certified Organic Baked Foundation, which comes in a bamboo compact and provides buildable coverage from sheer to medium.
Small Changes, Big Impact
If overhauling your entire routine feels overwhelming, start small:
- Choose one product to switch to a plastic-free alternative. Ethique’s Shampoo Bar was my gateway product.
- Opt for glass packaging when possible. Drunk Elephant’s C-Firma Fresh Vitamin C Serum comes in an amber glass bottle that protects the formula and can be recycled indefinitely.
- Support brands with take-back programs. Kiehl’s gives you a free product when you return 10 empty containers through their Recycle & Be Rewarded program.

Looking at the Full Lifecycle
True sustainability means considering the entire product lifecycle. REN Clean Skincare’s Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic may be my favorite example of this approach. Not only is the bottle made from reclaimed ocean plastic, but the pump is also fully recyclable—a rare find in the beauty world where most pumps contain metal springs that contaminate the recycling stream.
The formula itself is vegan and gentle enough for daily use, gradually smoothing my skin texture without irritation. It’s the perfect example of how vegan beauty brands are leading the way in both formula and packaging innovation.
My Sustainable Favorites
After much research and testing, these products have earned permanent spots in my routine:
- Axiology’s Refillable Lipstick: Gorgeous colors, creamy formula, and the elegant metal tube is designed to last a lifetime.
- Meow Meow Tweet’s Multi-Purpose Balm: Comes in a compostable paper tube and works for lips, cuticles, and dry patches.
- Alima Pure’s Loose Mineral Foundation: Simple paper packaging, and the coverage is buildable from sheer to full.
